CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine – Two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Seth Wescott from Carrabassett Valley and 15-year-old Lindsay Stewart from Cape Elizabeth, Maine took first place in the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively, today at the 3rd Annual Sugarloaf Banked Slalom.

The two-day Banked Slalom is a snowboard-only, open registration event, in which snowboarders young and old compete on a winding course of banked turns down Sugarloaf’s storied terrain.

Wescott has helped organize the event and build the course in each of the past three years, but this was the first time he has won the event. He finished in third place in 2011 and sat out the 2012 event due to an injury.

Wescott’s time of 1:18.35 put him on top of the field and just ahead of fellow World-Cup snowboarder Alex Tuttle from Stratton, Maine, who finished the course in a time of 1:21.90. Defending champion Ryan Flynn from Damariscotta, Maine finished in third with a time of 1:23.18

On the women’s side, Emily Eames, and Tessa O’Brien, finished in second and third place, respectively.

With their victories, Wescott and Stewart each earned an automatic entry into the 2014 Mt Baker Legendary Banked Slalom (LBS) at Washington’s Mt. Baker resort. Because Wescott was already guaranteed entry into the 2014 LBS after his 2013 win there, he deferred his entry from the Sugarloaf Banked Slalom to Tuttle.
