Sunday River Turning More Than 10 Million Gallons of Water Into Snow in 24 Hours
NEWRY, Maine -??“ With a mix of 240 traditional and low-energy snow guns firing together, Sunday River is in the midst of a 24 hour period where the resort will average 7000 gallons of pumped water per minute totaling over 10 million gallons of water in 24 hours. Favorable weather is forecast to continue through the coming weeks to allow further intensive snowmaking operations.
The amount of water being pumped in this 24-hour period will lay down an amount of snow that would bury Portland’s Monument Square 117 feet deep or cover 56 football fields one foot deep.
“These are the best temps we’ve seen all season,” said Andrew Bresette, Sunday River Snowmaking Supervisor. “The new technology in the low-energy guns allows us to run a higher count of guns in prime temps like these.”
Sunday River is planning on doubling their amount of open terrain on Wednesday when up to 16 trails will be open. The resort expects to offer approximately 25 trails for the coming weekend on multiple peaks serviced by at least 4 lifts.
The forecast beyond the next 24 hours includes additional snowmaking temperatures plus a chance for natural snow. Early season ski and stay packages are available starting at $55 per person per night and more information is available by calling (800) 543-2SKI or visiting www.sundayriver.com.
