STOWE, VT- Reflecting its commitment to the inclusion of snowboarding in its mission and collection, the Vermont Ski Museum announced today it has changed its name to the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum. The announcement was made during a Vermont ski/snowboard industry media event in Boston.

“The museum’s board of directors has long recognized the need to formally acknowledge snowboarding’s Vermont heritage and we’re pleased to announce our decision to change our name to include snowboarding,” said Tom Sequist, Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum board chair.

“The roots of skiing and snowboarding run very deep in Vermont and we’re committed to collecting and preserving their Vermont history and continuing to be a resource for those seeking information about skiing and snowboarding in Vermont.”

The Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum was founded by Brandon resident Roy Newton, who for years sought a permanent home for his collection. In 2001, a group of Stowe business owners raised funds to relocate the museum to Stowe. With a generous donation from Chuck and Jan Perkins, the museum leased the old Stowe Town Hall on Main Street from the Town of Stowe. Renamed the Perkins Building, the facility was renovated and opened in 2002. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Director/Curator of the museum is Meredith Scott.

The museum’s mission is to “collect, preserve and celebrate” the history of alpine and Nordic skiing and snowboarding in Vermont. In addition, the museum houses the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame, which each year inducts members who have contributed to the foundation and growth of skiing and snowboarding in Vermont.

“We’ve always included snowboarding in our exhibition and look forward to expanding our snowboarding collection,” Sequist said. “Our board of directors already includes a snowboarding pioneer and we look forward to adding more boarding advocates in the coming months.”

The Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum is changing its existing logo to reflect the addition of snowboarding in its official name. Rebranding is being undertaken by Violette Design of Stowe. The firm is a stalwart in the ski and snowboarding industry, with its owner Lance Violette most notably having been responsible for hundreds of Burton Snowboard graphics and many of its most influential marketing campaigns.

The Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum is funded through membership contributions and sponsorships by individuals, companies and organizations supporting the museum’s mission.
