NEWRY, ME ??” Sunday River’s popular Santa Sunday is expected to bring hundreds of skiing and riding Santas to the slopes Dec. 5. The 4th annual event is also a fundraiser for a local charity, and is part of Santa Weekend at the resort.

Santa Sunday participants don a full Santa costume and donate a minimum of $10 that goes toward the Bethel Rotary Club’s annual Christmas drive to purchase gifts for children in need. In return, they receive free skiing and riding for that day and two additional lift tickets that are valid until Dec. 17.

In past Santa Sunday events, more than 200 people have registered for the event. Santas gather at South Ridge at 11 am for photos. Pre-registration is required for this event, and participants must adhere to event rules in order to participate, including the costume requirements. To register, go to www.sundayriver.com.

The annual Santa Ball is at the Phoenix House and Well across from the South Ridge Base Lodge. Music will be provided by Named by Strangers. Those in Santa costume receive free admission. Doors open at 9 am.

A variety of holiday events are also scheduled in Bethel. The weekend’s events include the Taste of Bethel & Theme Wreath Auction at Telstar High School from noon to 2 pm, free wagon rides in the historic village from 2 pm to 4 pm, and the annual Christmas tree lighting and arrival of Santa on the town common at 6 pm, with caroling to follow. Also, the premier of the 12 Dogs of Christmas, a movie filmed in Bethel, will be held at Telstar High School. The premier party begins at 6 and movie viewing is at 7. Admission is $15 for adults and $10 for children, with all proceeds going to area charities.
