BENNINGTON, NH ??” When Bethann Fultz was unloading from the top of the West Double Chair at Crotched Mountain on Friday evening, a proposal to be married was the furthest thing from her mind.

When then boyfriend Christopher Clauss, now fianc?В©, fell to his knees to help Bethann adjust her boots, he popped the question. She was surprised of course, but a moment later, an engagement ring appeared from Christopher’s jacket pocket and found its way on her finger. 2 minutes later, a dozen long stemmed roses appeared along with a bottle of champagne from France and glasses for two. A video camera caught the entire moment on film. Christopher’s plan went off without a hitch, but it was slightly more elaborate than Bethann knew.

Christopher had been at the mountain the day prior, planning the moment. It had to be a surprise, it had to be caught on video, the roses and champagne had to arrive at the right moment and Bethann had to say “Yes”. Enlisting the help of several employees at Crotched Mountain, a plan was hatched. A spy would track the couple on the mountain until they arrived at the pre-arranged destination atop the West Double Chair. The spy would then play the role of innocent bystander while being asked to hold Christopher’s video camera for a minute or two. A lift operator would keep the roses hidden and the champagne chilled in nearby snow. When it all came together, everyone involved played the part flawlessly.

“He’s amazing. He’s just amazing.”, said Bethann reflecting on the moment.

“I think that was really cool”, said Kirk Dragon, a lift department supervisor involved with the engagement plan.

Christopher and Bethann have not yet set a date for marriage, but they will always remember their skiing engagement on Crotched Mountain.
