WINTERGREEN, Virginia ??” Wintergreen Resort’s snow guns fired up noon Friday. The snowmaking-specific weather forecasting system the resort uses indicates good, sub-freezing conditions for the next week and beyond. Currently, the plan is to make snow around the clock building the base on the slopes. With the state-of-the-art snowmaking system Wintergreen has in place now, they will be able to re-open more terrain very quickly.

Wintergreen was able to survive an 18-day hiatus in which temperatures were too warm to make snow. Prior to the warm spell, the snowmaking crews had made a surplus of snow and preserved it on north facing slopes and in shaded areas. For the past 3 weeks, they have worked day and night to move that snow around and carefully groom it to keep terrain open for skiing and snowboarding. Not once during the warm period did Wintergreen ever have to close the ski area, but everyone at the resort is much relieved to see cold temperatures return.
