SOUTH EGREMONT, Massachusetts ??” What a difference a week makes. After last week’s heavy rains, the weather at the Catamount Ski Area, on the New York/Massachusetts state line in the Berkshires, has turned sharply colder ??“ and the resort will open this weekend with top-to-bottom skiing.

The resort’s terrain park is slated to open as well.

“We’re making snow on as many as half a dozen trails at a time,” said Catamount General Manager Bill Gilbert. “We’re seeing temps as low as the teens, and that’s optimal for snowmaking.”

The resort also expects to pick up some natural snow this week. On Saturday, December 10, Catamount expects to open at least a dozen trails and three lifts.

“That will include five trails in the Meadows area,” Gilbert said. “It will allow skiers and snowboarders to ride our new triple chairlift for the first time.”

Skiers and riders looking for more challenge can also ride the resort’s Ridge chairlift, which accesses the summit. The terrain park will feature a number of boxes and rails, with additional elements added in the upcoming weeks as snowmaking continues.

Gilbert also said that the resort’s Snowsports Learning Center, which is served by an easy-to-ride moving carpet lift, would open for the season this weekend.
