Newry, Maine (October 6, 2011)-Earlier this morning, Sunday River started on the first day of its two-day pre-season snowmaking test, firing off 50 snowguns across its T2 trail located near the top of its Locke Mountain. Tomorrow, should temperatures allow, the resort will blast an additional 50 guns across its Sunday Punch and Lower Sunday Punch trails to complete the test.
For the past four years, Sunday River has been the first resort on the East Coast to open and last fall, the resort became the first resort in the country to open thanks to a series of quality-control tests similar to the one conducted this morning.
Prior to this morning, Sunday River checked for water pressure efficiencies across three mountain peaks as well as observed all hoses and hydrants to ensure their effectiveness. Once colder temperatures set in for the duration of winter, Sunday River will begin to make snow on Locke Mountain, the resort’s first peak to open every year.
Sunday River opened last winter on October 24, 2010, and thanks to its snowmaking efforts, the resort also celebrated the longest season in the East, staying open six months and six days.
This weekend’s snowmaking test falls just before the resort’s annual Fall Festival Weekend and serves as a reminder to guests that winter is approaching. This timely display also serves to remind skiers and riders of the resort’s season pass sale deadline taking place Monday, October 10, 2011.
Sunday River’s opening day for the 2011-2012 season is still weather dependant.
