LUDLOW, Vermont — Okemo Mountain Resort has a reputation for listening to its loyal skiers and snowboarders, and taking action on suggestions that can help improve the overall experience of its guests. When complaints about the base lodge atmosphere and the clutter of ski bags under tables started to escalate, Okemo owners Tim and Diane Mueller made a decision to implement a bag-free-zone policy on the main floor in the base lodge. They recognized that enforcement of the new policy would be the greatest challenge.

The solution to the enforcement problem was to post plenty of signs and appoint base lodge greeters who would gently explain the new policy to guests in an effort to make the entire base lodge more comfortable for everyone. However, it was the creative brainchild of Okemo’s Culinary Services Director Ellen Demers, to dress the greeters in black-and-white-striped referee uniforms as a way to add a little brevity and amusement to the enforcement of the new policy. Some of the greeters even wear whistles around their necks for added effect.

“Change can be difficult,” says Demers. We’re just trying to keep it fun.”

Forty years after it was built, Okemo’s base lodge underwent a retro re-do. What was old is new again as Okemo Mountain Resort’s circa 1968 base lodge received a fresh coat of paint with some fresh, stylin’ colors, new carpeting, new furniture and retro Formica surfaces. The interior speaks to the ???60s style, but with up-to-date verve. In addition, the base lodge was outfitted with storage racks and more coin-operated lockers. A basket-check room is available to help keep belongings secure and the base lodge tidy. The mezzanine level of the base lodge has not adopted the no-bags policy yet.

“The new policy implementation is going really well,” said Demers. “People are thrilled to have a comfortable place to boot up or to enjoy breakfast or lunch.
