I have pretty reliable intel that there is going to be an big announcement regarding mtn infrastructure this weekend in conjunction with the annual Sled Dog races. Stay tuned...

You mean it might actually take less time to take the lift up than hike starting next year? :D

Depends. How many years are left on your plan? :p

+ 1. I can recall plans to develop the East Bowl and the rest of Burke all the way back to when I first skied there in 1990! I also recall talk of a HSQ going all the way back to 1996 or so when Andy Holmes and crew were at the helm. I graduated from Junior High, High School, College, AND law school. I also got married and the "Quad" remains to the summit.

Exactly what I was thinking when I posted that. I remember when the old Northern Star "Future Plans" map was still up in the lodge showing the plans to develop West Peak (this was before I actually skied). There have been so many rumours/plans/speculation over the years that I'm not holding my breath until there is something that has actually been purchased. When said purchase is actually installed is another matter altogether.

Note: A picture of that old Northern Star plan would be pretty neat to review in present context.

I think they have also upgraded the toilet paper used in the bathrooms from single ply to dual ply

Nice list

I think you're missing the point. No one is knocking what has been done/purchased by the new managment and those improvements have been good for the mtn. But this next step is a big one that has been promised for a LONG time and a lot of people aren't going to get too excited about it until "ground is broken".

That is true, but a closer look reveals:

Purchase and install new Sherburne High Speed Quad
Purchase of new Prinoth Groomer
Renovation of Sherburne Base Lodge
Renovation and opening of Tamarack Restaurant and Pub
Purchase and install Sprung Structure for additional lodge seating
Purchase and install 2- 75-hp snowmaking feed pumps
Purchase and install 2-400hp high pressure vertical turbine snowmaking pumps
Purchase and install 10,500” of snowmaking pipe
Purchase and install 70 new low energy snow guns
Purchase and install Gilman tower and snow gun padding for entire Lower Mountain
Constructed new Midway ski trail

With the exception of the groomer, almost all of this was done in 2005. That was a year when the mountain had the worst year in the red.

Renovation of Cutter Inn

I think that some would prefer that the Cutter was still in business. I'm not sure if buying out the landmark establishment, putting it out of business, and converting it to office and storage space is progress. But then again they do invite FW to come back and do special nights every once in a while....

Re surface and shape Mid-Burke road

Dumping dirt on top of the paved road instead of repaving it is not exactly progress, but again.....

New paint Willoughby Chair

That made it faster! I also heard rumors of how much they paid for said paint job and someone made out well. We liked that improvement as much as the new chair pads.

New bull wheel installed Willoughby Chair

That was something that the state inspectors required be done because of age. Without it, no lift. I would not call it an improvement per se.

Widening of Willoughby Trail
Widening of Upper Bear Den Trail

QUITE unpopular with many. Especially the closing of Camper's Carry. Not really necessary either.

Receipt of Act 250 Master Plan

This is not a fair statement. The plan has NOT been fully approved and is still winding its way through the system. Burke has only received "partial findings" for its plan. This is not full approval. Additionally, this is at least the third "master plan" for the mountain in several decades.

Purchased snowmobile

One snowmobile is something to discuss? Honestly?

Addition of new snowmaking fan guns

FIVE to be exact and most are relegated to the lower mountain. On a mountain that size five does not make much of a dent.

Wind tower design and permit for Summit

Again, a permit does not mean anything unless it is acted upon. It also seems weird that the former management spent considerable amounts of time and money making sure that a wind project next door DID NOT go in. They even bought the rights. But then again, no problem if folks don't have to look at it I guess.

Don't get me wrong. I think that the mountain has come a long way. But I think it has a ways to go. I also think we need to keep things in perspective.

WOW, I'm not sure why this list created this type of response. Maybe I should of posted this in a new thread. All these things were done by the current owner in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010. Sure they started in June 2005 when they had their contract in place even though ownership didn,t transfer to December. They did a lot in 2005 yes, but they certainly have invested millions of dollars in the following years, not just buy a groomer.

They certainly did not put the Cutter Inn out of business. FW retired very happily and enjoys an excellent relationship with the mountain.

Yes I consider a graded gravel road to be an big improvement over a frost heaved, pot hole filled asphalt that was there before.

I am not sure about how the paint job made the lift faster, I try not to listen to rumors

I do consider when you update a lift to be an improvement.

Yes, the act 250 partial findings are a huge deal, It took 5 years of full time work and millions of dollars to get to this point. It provides the roadmap for the future of Burke.
"The completion of the Master Plan permit process is a significant accomplishment for Burke and is key to moving forward with future improvements at the resort."

I will remove the snowmobile from the list

Yes, they tried out 5 fan guns this year, in anticipation of adding many more in the future.

And yes I agree we should keep things in perspective. And the reality is Burke has never had a brighter future. All of these improvements have been made in the past 5 years and Burke has no debt. Look what they have done just in the past 6 months. You know better than I do how important Burke is to the entire NEK.
