Working on it... I know it's fairly lame but I do have a good excuse. My wife is 4 months pregnant.

Last weekend, I spent Saturday painting a baby nursery, and Sunday skiing. Gonna be mostly day trips this year which will make it hard to get really up north, like Jay or Stowe. If we get some decent snowfall coming up I will take a couple sick days here / there and continue hitting Wachusett probably at least weekly.

And I agree with others who say that you're looking at it backwards. THIS is the year. Good luck trying to get away from parental responsibilities next season!

My wife is learning to ski, I already have it planned out, next year we will be hitting the slopes in tandem. She takes lessons in the morning while I watch baby. I ski in afternoon while she watches baby.

And yeah... I heard all about it how next year will be even worse. I'm sure it will be, from a days perspective, but it's all good, because in a couple years when my son is smoking me on the slopes Ill be a proud daddy

Get out there when you can. If you ask me its going to be worth having a year with slightly fewer days for a lifetime of more enjoyable ones. In a year and a half your little tyke will be on the mountain with you and that will be awesome!!! Can't wait to ski with that bugger!!!

Well that's true Bill, once I get past the AZ Summit it's gonna be 1.5 hr radious. I don't want to be on the slopes when my kid is born

Pregnant year and year one were good ski years. Everything up to kindergarden (this year) seems very skiable. It's next year - 1st grade - that scares me.

Indeed. I know children = less time for me (if you're doing it right, which IMO is the way to go). Tis' why I ain't got none.

Hey Nick, and there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with spending a few extra seconds while you're at the mountain this year checking out the daycare facilities! Might not come into play if you and your wife are going to the the "tag team" skiing/childcare thing nexty season, but when kid #2 comes along.....

And BTW, I know for a fact that Killington starts teaching kids at age 2 (that's where both of my kids made their 1st turns)

Yup, most mountains have daycare, at some mountains, it can, and often does book up quite quick too! But on mountain daycare lets both parents ski, or heck, sometimes, 1 skiing parent can take the kid with them to the mountain and give the other parent a "day off" (I scored some BIG points with my wife by doing that a few times )

1 1/2 will be tough to pull off. Put my kids on ski's at 3 1/2. We had a gift from god in that our parents were able and willing to help us out and give us some nice breaks so we could ski. We also did the duty switch at the lodge several times too (we were crafty and switched tickets as well). The waiting and patience will pay off in the end. Its quite the feeling when you see it kick in and they take off from you for the 1st time. Being at the other end of the spectrum (meaning our kids are at the point where they no longer want to ski with mom and dad) you've got alot of good times ahead.

IMO, you are right to focus on the future. If you play your cards right, you might be able to ski a lot more 5 years from now, than you have recently. Pay your dues over the next few years and reap the dividends for years to come. First priority is to get your wife to love skiing. She is just learning now. Do all you can to make sure it is a positive experience. When the kids get old enough to ski, make it fun and make sure they love it. When the whole family loves to ski, the family budget discussion around season passess, ski equipment and even a cabin rental/purchase becomes much easier. Hitting the slopes EVERY SINGLE WEEKEND is a no-brainer. Imagine doing that in a family of four if you are the only passionate skier in the family. Not gonna happen.

In our family, we all look forward to ski season, because we love to ski, but also because spend more quality time together than at any other time of the year. If I was the only skier in the family, I would probably ski just a few times a year.

Be patient and enjoy every step along the way. Before you know it, your little hotshot(s) will zip past you in the bumps. Have fun.
