Hey guys,

Me and a friend were thinking of heading up to Cannon Mt. in NH for a day. We were going to go Friday, March 10. Does that sound good?

Also, how is it there? What kind of varietey do they have? It looks pretty nice from the website, but that isn't very accurate. It looks like they don't have a lot of their terrain open right now. I think the gondola is closed now.

Just looking for some tips... Thanks guys.

Ah, yeah. Sounds good to me. What did you want me to say? Something sarcastic? Just kidding.

If you can swing it, Thursdays are two-for-one days at Cannon  $27 each.

What do you like?

Read our trip report from this weekend. Great day. More snow needed to get the natural snow trails open and other trails in tip-top shape.

Some OB options too...need snow.

Good variety and no crowds on weekdays.

And the tram was open....

Ok with cannon I have either had the best day of skiing there or the worst, it all depends on how you hit it. Others here may disagree.

Allright, thanks. Ill read that Trip Report. Looks like im going to Cannon now.

Also, the tickets are only $25 for me, Im under 17, but thanks anyways!

that is a good mid-week price. enjoy it while you can ;)

the gondola is always closed at cannon... cause they don't have one ;) assuming you meant the tram, once the tram opens, cannon usually keeps it open until the end of the season or the week before the end at worst. it only closes for wind holds during the season so fear not, the tram will be open for your march 10th visit.

regarding the terrain, i don't think many areas have much of their natural snow trails open with exception of the northern greens. there is still before your trip there, so plenty of time for cannon to get more of their terrain open. the glades and tramline hardly ever open, so cannon usually doesn't get much above ~92ish% open except when the snow is good. a quick scan of their trail report shows all their snow making and groomer trails appear to be open. i can't imagine the lack of snow could go on for two and a half months, at least i hope not! so i suspect you will do pretty well on your trip.

regarding cannon itself, a previous poster said it can be the best or the worst. it can also be everything in between, but more often than not it is a mountain of extremes. best skied after some fresh snow. but if you like to ski hard and ski fast, cannon offers up some of the best new england hard pack has to offer when there haven't been any storms lately. they do have terrain for all levels, but to enjoy the mountain best, an upper intermediate ability level or better is preferred as cannon's trails ski harder than other mountains of comparable nature.

Thanks. This may sound dumb, but can you take the tram to the top to ski down?
Skierman, you should be advised, since this is your first trip to cannon, that it can be hard to get to the tram. especially if you are not an advanced skier. if you are, disregard this warning. but if you are not, you will notice a trail named the "tram cut back" that cuts through the front face trails. taking the tram cut back involves a flat run out with lots of poling. best option is to either ski down avalanche or take the more mellow banshee slopes. even taking banshee involves skiing down one of the nastier parts of the mountain on uppper avalanche. as a frequent cannon skier, i don't normally rely on the tram for many runs on a given day, usually 3 or 4 tops. cannon is best skied in sections, though a top to bottom thigh burner is always in order :D

Allright, thanks for the tips guys. Yeah, I would consider myself an advanced skier though.

Seems like evreything is looking good for Cannon :D .

Skierman,

Cannon's a blast if there's freshies. I live ten miles south of it and we got robbed on this last storm, a "dusting". Watch the weather and drop on it right after fresh snow, you'll love it.

Skied nothing but groomers this past weekend, my first trip there.

The fun potential there is undeniable though. Looked down various glades and tree shots, not to mention Tramline, and just drooled. The lack of snow (2" on top of dirt) was a bit depressing.

I'll try again in a few weeks.

What is the difference between a tram and a gondola? Is it just the # of passengers.

Also, I'm taking the family up to the White Mtns. Fri. for a week. Any recomendations for advanced intermediate skiers? With the lack of fresh snow , who has the best snowmaking-grooming?
Thanks for the info.

Number of passengers (tram takes more), sure, but more importantly is the function- gondolas don't stop, trams do; gondolas go round in a circuit, trams go up, then back down on the same line; you can have a bunch of gondolas on a line, but only two trams at the most.

Gondoliers wear stripey shirts and funny hats, Tramps wear fishnet stockings and sometimes no shirt. I'll take the tram, please.

Upon further (actual) research, I find that there is, technicaly, no difference between a tram and a gondola. the above definitions are to be used as a guide, only. Your mileage may vary. I'll still take the tramp.

trams vs gondolas

Also on gondolas, at least on this side of the pond, you usually sit down while a tram you stand. On a busy day gondolas are nice and pleasent to use while trams they stuff you in like sardines.

Another diference in my travels around New England, gondola cabins make great lawn ornaments while I have yet to see a tram car hanging from someones tree in their frontyard.

Who else has noticed a chair hanging from a tree just up Rt 100 a few miles from Rt 4/Kmart access rd. There are several gondi cars from the Sugarbush gondola hanging around all overthe MRV.

The thought of riverc0il giving JimG. a tour of his home mountain is an interesting one. I think Charlie S. is still sore from last season... ;)

I figured as much...been waiting for the invite. I'll be back in the area around March 10th. Pray for snow.

Think you'll be all healed up by 3/10? I'm hoping so, but don't push it if the Doc says no. If there's one thing I learned about injuries it's that you don't push the process and wind up re-injuring yourself.

Sorry I missed you on Sat...I was wiped out after teaching my 3 1/2 year old at Brookside. It amazes me that I can ski non-stoppers all day and never get tired, but put me in a half day lesson with a kid and forget it.
