Damaged Loon Mountain bridge collapses in Lincoln

******.

Someone go slap the original designer for this shallow abutment on the outside turn of the East Branch. The photographer and gentleman in the picture are standing in the washed out "River Lot."

Not really, considering they have access via the south mountain bridge.

It doesn't suck to have to take a detour around and through the neighborhoods @ South Mtn. over to the main base? Oh wait, yea it does. Have you been through there? I'd rather take the Kanc to the correct bridge.

Could it have been worse? Yes. Does it suck? Yes.

I don't know how long it takes to fix a bridge... but they're going to have to get on that pretty quick...

The road from South Mountain doesn't have a prayer of supporting the amount of traffic loon sees on a busy weekend day.

And their Highland Games festival that is always well attended and a good money maker for everyone in the area is only 2 weeks away.... I doubt the South Mountain route could support the load-in for that, never mind the traffic they see Friday afternoon - Sunday.

I smell "shuttle bus" in their future.

There are going to be a lot of busy bridge builders and inspectors this year. Competition will be stiff.

That really sucks. Hopefully the southern span of the International Bridge was also not damaged – should make it much easier to repair if it was not. Hopefully they can get at least part of it fixed for the ski season, as having to rely on the South Mountain Bridge for the entire season would really suck.

Bridges took a big hit because of all the flooding...same in the Catskills.

Calling that lot "washed out" does not do the erosive power of H2O justice.

My backyard trout stream was raging on Sunday afternoon and rising rapidly. First time I've been genuinely concerned about it. That was the most water moving through it I've ever seen. Fortunately,
it would have taken 2X as much more water to really cause a valid concern.

It crested and then dropped quickly. But some folks lower to the creek were washed out in my neighborhood too.

I just pray this does not mean more traffic at Cannon, as people decide to skip Loon and keep driving. Go to Waterville its a way better mountain.

Just got a press release from Loon - check it

http://news.alpinezone.com/100618/

incoln, NH, August 31, 2011: The damaged Loon Mountain Resort bridge, which provides access to the Resort from Route 112/The Kancamagus Highway, will be replaced by temporary bridges until the main bridge can be repaired. This will allow the upcoming New Hampshire Highland Games to proceed at Loon as scheduled and normal winter operations to proceed as usual. Alternate vehicular access to the Resort is currently available via the South Peak Bridge, located two miles to the west in the town of Lincoln.

A temporary pedestrian bridge will be in place by mid September, in time for the New Hampshire Highland Games. After the Highland Games, the pedestrian bridge will be removed and will be replaced by a temporary two-lane bridge to accommodate vehicular traffic. This bridge will be in place prior to the beginning of Loon's winter ski season and will remain in place until after the season ends. Both temporary bridges will be put into place by the NH Department of Transportation (NHDOT).

Repair work on the main bridge is slated to begin next spring and will be conducted by an independent third party contractor to be hired by the Town of Lincoln. The timeline for repair work and the main bridge reopening is not yet available.

I agree, it looks like that abutment should have been on piles. With wing walls too.
