In a season to remember Powder Corp (The recent owner of Killington resort) elected to discontinue the annual Bear Mountain Mogul Challenge. In spite of that, a motivated group of skiers took it upon themselves to have an event. It was a real grassroots effort. Organizers approached ski shops and restaurants for donations and the event was well attended. The night before 55-65 of the competitors and friends met at one of the local restaurants "Sushi Yoshi" which donated free sushi to the enthusiastic crowd. Pairings for the Saturday event were held and plenty of laughs were had by all.
The day of the event competors gathered in the Killington base lodge and rules were discussed. The temps that morning were hovering around freezing. Things were pretty firm as the group took to the hill. On a day that most skiers would have stayed in, this group of 60 or so skiers skied in two great lines on the lower Superstar trail and at about 1:40 the unofficial event commenced. There were 55 men and 14 women competing. There was a three judge panel headed up by Jim Theodore (former US World Cup Mogul coach). The winner in the mens catagory was Robert(Bobby)Zeola who was training with the Canadian freestyle team earlier this season and Catherine Toupence a two time winner of the BMMC. The top 4 competitors were awarded prizes and the two winners were each given a new pair of skis. Competitors were each given free tickets to the Snoop Dog Concert. Later that evening a large group attended a party at event organizer Frank Marinella's home. In attendance was former world cup and olympic competitor Evan Dybvig. With the outpouring of support it appears this should be an ongoing event for some time......Reprinted from Mogulskiing.net

Pretty cool idea! Would be cool to keep it going every Spring. Unfortunately, now it's out of the bag and everybody knows about it including POWDR so you can count on them attempting to squash this like the BMMC next season. I'm still surprised that they haven't come after the organizer Frank Marinella with some kinda of BS charge...

Word is that Nyberg was seen at the bottom of SS looking up at the event with a very disapproving look on his face. Long live the SSMC!

Very nice. A great way to take the initiative instead of :argue: Looks like a lot of people attended and turned a negative into a positive.

if K MGT is not happy about this can they stop/ban it? kind of in the same way it is forbidden to conduct private lessons on the mountain and if caught you can have your ticket pulled, could they conceivably do the same to competitors?

I am sure they could. While not the same kind of "theft of services" a private lesson is, it certainly is a "non sanctioned event" on their "leased" property.

Who'se "word" was that? Sounds kinda contrived to me intended to continue to spur this "against the man" thing that seems to be going on. I can't imagine any issues with an informal group of skiers making a grassroots bump comp, from anyone.

occupy superstar ...

it was very cool. at first they skied in a line on bittersweet before turning their attention to supe. hammer, radio ron were there.

hopefully they showed management just how stupid they were for killing the bmmc and they bring it back next year. whether there's a party or not, the bmcc is a 30 yr nationally recognized brand. you can't buy that ...

I don't see how so. The trail isn't closed. They just tracked out some moguls as best they could and then got after it.

I guess I could see if it was 300 people and they threw up banners and brought shovels and built kickers and all that, but just 50 - 60 people informally bracketing against each other for fun?

Sounds like it was a fun event, sometimes those small gatherings are the best of all.

Someone on KZone said it, but, as usual, he had no proof to confirm it!
I can't imagine he was happy about it though.

Gotta be one of the coolest things ever done in terms of proving a point/making a statement in a civil and constructive manner. the pics on facebook are awesome.

Maybe frank will come out of his alpinezone retirement to comment.

dont give them any ideas.

but don't you think doing anything would just further the cause? dude would become a martyr, larger than life, the godfather of the new american century of amateur mogul skiing.

It's just so bizarre that someone can say something like "I bet the guy was there with a frown on his face" and next thing it becomes fact.

Use your brains, people  It's some serious groupthink going on.
