I’ll be 55 in March and reasonably fit. Something new this year is a very low back pain on one side.

After some reading I’m pretty sure this is being caused by hip mobility so I’ll be doing some exercises for that starting soon.

Anyone else have hip issues affecting their skiing?
 
Well..Im sure not the way I was 10 years ago.
Bad right knee.
2 bad shoulders.
Lower back goes out here and there.
SI joint goes out here and there.
Getting old sux...i want my money back

Beats NOT getting old though! ;)

And I will say that it's not a bad thing to have a chiropractor, who has an adjustment table in his condo, as a part of my regular ski crew! He's definitely had various joints over most of my body making some really crazy cracking sounds over the years, but boy does it often feel better after!
 
Few years back, started doing dryland and stretching with kids five days a week entire off season and nothing hurts anymore. The workouts are not about strength or endurance, it is all about mobility and stability. Knees and shoulders used to ache to the point of waking me up in the night. Skied all but four days since Thanksgiving, legs still get tired but joints are good.
 
Oh, so that is the back pain I am feeling.....makes sense! Stretches here I come!
Never had back pain skiing like I do this year....it doesn't stop me but I was wondering if my posture was terrible all of the sudden?

Hips,.. mine had been pretty much fine my whole life. I definitely have used (maybe abused) them over the years. I've been a runner most of my life and crashed moguls for as long as I can remember. I started using the peloton a few years back and all of a sudden - I started to have some hip issues. It started on one side and got worse,... got an MRI and they diagnosed me having Bone Marrow Edema in my hip. (swelling in the joint) Stopped the peloton and did PT for about 4 months and it eventually went away. I started the peloton again and after about 4 months, I have the same issue in my other hip (bone marrow edema) except it was much worse. MRI, Arthritis specialist,... crutches for 12 weeks and PT,... It finally went away - although I lost most of my ski season last year. I've been real paranoid about doing anything now as I don't want to go back to where I was last year. I've skied a handful of time this year and I have absolutely no pain. One thing I have noticed, since I quit drinking alcohol - any little pains I had in my hip have completely disappeared. I have read in multiple place that alcohol can definitely cause swelling in bones and joints. I'm hoping a dry life style is the answer I have been looking for.
 
My lower back issues are caused by tight hamstrings. The seasons that I bike more the worse my back gets in the fall. Crazy I am in better shape those years but then my back hurts and I have to shut it down for a few weeks. Less issues when I am fat and out of shape
 
I'm only 35 but I get lower back pain when I push it too hard, like smashing moguls for 7 hrs. Sometimes it doesn't hit until i sit in the car. Always feels better after a good night's sleep

All Day Moguls followed by a 4 hour car ride SUCKS
But we keep coming back for more.
That was 35 years ago.

My nemesis is these long narrow traverses with big woops...no mistakes on those...and by the time you get to where..you want to get..your a little shot..mentaly and physicaly.
But we keep coming back for more.
 
Low back pain on one side sounds like sciatica to me. You may just need to stretch out those hamstrings and glutes.
I've got a bit of that on the other side where the symptoms present differently.

I failed to properly relate this to my skiing above. I do a decent carved turn to one side but the other skids a bit involuntarily. While trying to correct my lower back tweaks a bit. Reading I’ve done says that if your hip has limited mobility, other body parts (like your back) will try to compensate, and it all seems to fit in my case.

Agree about hamstrings though, if they’re tight it can cause problems. I was diagnosed with classic plantar fasciitis last year and I’ve cleared it up a lot with calf stretching right after Peloton workouts. Like 80% better.

100% notice a difference when I stack on a post ride stretch class after I do a Peloton cycling class(es) - defintely is now a part of my post ride cool down process
