Jay Peak: 4 to 8 inches!!!???

Most recent forecast calls for 4-8" of SNOW across upper elevations beginning tonight and lasting through Monday night. Almost too difficult to believe but, again, we're talking Jay Peak here.

Can this be true? I need some first hand accounts. I'm heading up there tommorow... should I really get my hopes up?

If it does happen, it will likely be dust on crust or dust on dirt. Yesterday is was 60 F and sunshine at Loon. Good snow there. Today, in the Upper Valley (100 miles S of Jay) it is probably 45 F with dark clouds and wind. Likely it is cold at Jay. Probably nasty.

So I don't know what to say. Read trip reports from today....this one would be a good reference as to what things are like at 'that latitude.' :wink:

hopefully meat and the other jay area folks will pipe in with first hand reports. i will likely be heading up tomorrow after work for a run. though i wouldn't trust jay peak. just take a look at their snow report. they posted one report for the entire weekend on friday night and their trail report has not been updated to reflect that they only have an estimated 25 trails open( their trail report also contradicts itself and says 40 -- that is a pretty big varience reported on two different locations on the same report!!!). their interactive trail map still shows almost the whole mountain open, but i suspect they are down to just the jet and bon quad area. 4-8" sounds nice but i am not holding my breathe! i have not followed jay peak reporting until this season as previously i haven't skied jay much, but these guys just might have the most hyped reports in the business. they make wildcat reporting look like the gold standard snow reporting. so... i am cautiously optimistic but not holding my breathe. i wouldn't book a hotel room based on that forecast, but i would be ready to take a day trip vacation day on tuesday if it blows big. post work earn your turns for me if things blow big.

Thanks guys, I'm just trying to make the decision between Kmart and Jay. Jay is cheaper, but a further drive. I was at Killington yesterday and the conditions were fun...soft and slow and bumpy. Is that accurate for Jay too?

Just got back from Jay. About 1/2 inch on the upper mountain and dusting at the base. The slush from Saturday did not freeze over. Rumor has it only the Jet and Metro will be running after today. Only trails worth skiing are the Jet, Haynes and Interstate. Jet has decent coverage. Haynes is getting thin in spots and Interstate was very slushy.

The only one I saw that was skiable was Expo glade. Valhalla was thin on Friday when I skied it and was closed today. All other woods I saw were closed. I wouldn't ski anything but Jet & Haynes without rock skis.

This is similar to what happened yesterday at Sugarloaf, except that only the lower 1/3 of the mountain thawed out, the rest was frozen solid. Jay is currently reporting 12 open trails, so I guess the big snowfall did not materialize.

It does not matter how much snow falls now. What matters is how much $$$ is made. Jay says this "may be" their last week. #'s are probably down.

It matters how much snow falls to those of us skiing after the lifts close :lol: In all seriousness, I hope no one drove up to Jay based on their 4-8" prediction. They might get a little tonight, but the Fat Lady is singing with only 12 trails open.
