Jay Peak Extreme Ski Comp

Jay Peak used to hold an extreme/free ski comp off the front face. Do they still hold this comp?

**** all three. i would be all over it. whiteface ski patrol would have to realistic about opening them up. when evey you enter a comp you sign a waiver so it should work.

It would be cool. I think what makes Jay work well for that comp is theres a decent view for spectators. On Mansfield you don't quite have the same thing anywhere in bounds. Even over looking up the chin at hour glass and other routes, much of the view is blocked and spectators would have to hike in.

From pictures I've seen of the slides, it looks like there would be a decent view from the bottom, but again spectators would have to hike in.

Hardline, are you referring to the competitors hiking or the spectators? I agree that hiking in would not be a big deal for competitors...but maybe for spectators it would, to the extent you hope to have any. Just the publicity of such an event would benefit any mountain though, I'd figure, even if people don't get to watch.

both. the people that would really want to see it would hike in. they could do flat screens in the lodge for the people that didn't want to hike. then do replays on rsn.

Magic has had a few Extreme Skiing competions held on Red Line. The fun part was the better views were from the lift. Watching people air over the cliff bands was humbling. As a former competitor told me "My days of risking death or maiming for a free pair of skis are over."

Pretty much nobody watched the Jay comp this past year. Maybe twenty watched the final.....if that, and most were competitors that finished their run already.

It would be great if the comps got more exposure, but they are usually small, short, and are not advertised enough.

I did the Jay comp about 8 years ago...there were too many competitors...they had a "qualifier" run but qualified everyone so instead of two judged runs they only had time for one...it was on the face chutes right under the tram...there were people who "qualified" who could barely make it down the chutes let alone take any air. Hopefully its changed since then.

I'd have to go with not much. Maybe 30degrees...and that's for the steep sections....the run out is flat.

they have to limit the field. start with 50 down to 25 then maybe 10 for the final on the second day. you do an online sign up.i would love to something like this togehter. i have alot of corp. contacts. so getting money i dont think would be a problem. the ski areas i forsee being the bigest hurdle.

its something i wish would get more exposure. I know its not like the extreme comps they have out west but it still would be cool to watch.

i think the problem is the ski areas in the east dont see a market for it. there are plenty of corps. that would sponser a serries of events. so there is advertising money there.
