I was watching a MTB race last night and I saw the grand prize, and I thought that this was an old race because the grand prize of this Jeep sponsored event looked to be a Jeep Cherokee.

I later heard the announcer say it was a 2006 Jeep Commander. It looks like the retired Cherokee (which was my favorite SUV). I looked in last night's paper and there was an ad for one. It seats 7 people. I like the looks of it. Kind of retro. Has anybody seen one in person?

Retro? I don't see that, looks like a cross between the latest Cherokee and the H2 to me...

No sir, I don't like it. It is better looking than the Liberty though...

Saw it at my local dealer the other day...I agree that it looks too "hummerish" for me...plus who wants these gas guzzlers these days anyway..wait does this come with that engine displacement option? That would help...

It also sort of looks like a mid 80's Toyota Land Cruiser.

When you saw it in person, was it the size of a Hummer H2 or smaller?

I kind of dig it. It is reminiscent of my 2000 Cherokee Sport. It doesn't look that big here:

For better gas mileage you can get the 3.7L V6. That engine puts out 210 HP which is probably plenty for most people.

I'll take my original Cherokee anyday, it doesn't need to be retro... ;)

Yes, I drive a big gas guzzling SUV, its my daily driver at the moment.

Used to own a Durango myself. Before that a Toyota 4-runner. Got nothing against SUV's.

I'd buy another 4-runner in a heartbeat...not so for the Durango or any other Chrysler product. Terribly poor quality products.

My 2000 Dodge Stratus ES was junk. We've had great luck with the two Chrysler Jeeps we own though - a 2000 Cherokee Sport and a 2004 Grand cherokee Laredo. And yes, we have two gas-guzzling SUVs. They both get about 17-18 MPG which is probably an average MPG for your standard pickup truck. Funny how nobody ever rants about pickup drivers, but SUV-owners seem to be fair game...

Your Jeep Cherokee Sport was originally designed by the Jeep Corporation which then became part of American Motors; once part of AMC, build quality started to decline. After being sold to Chrysler, it got even worse. But the basically unchanged Cherokee was still a decent truck.

You've dodged a bullet with the GC Laredo, my business leased one as a company car and it was horrible.

As for pickups, remember that the image of a pickup driver is blue collar, a group that it's not politically correct to criticize. However, rich suburban SUV drivers are the scourge of civilization and very politically correct to criticize and harass.

Bet you didn't know you're rich, huh  ?

The latest Cherokee (XJ) was designed by Jeep when it was owned by AMC, AMC/Jeep was also responsible for starting the design work on what is now the Grand Cherokee (ZJ). The XJ Chero came out in 84 or 85, bringing an end to the original full size Cherokee (like my 78 pictured above). I don't buy into the whole build quality was crap under AMC thing. They ran Jeep from the early 70's, and in my opinion produced some of the best Jeeps ever made. Chrysler took over in 87, and well.. we'll just leave it at that..

My Dad owned a 1986 AMC/Jeep Cherokee and it was without doubt the BIGGEST piece of crap car anyone in my family ever owned. The transmission failed when that dog had 9 (nine) miles on the odometer. 9 miles and the tranny breaks down, then it was downhill from there.

I can only speak from personal experience, maybe you have had better luck.

Our Cherokee is a second to last year model and our GC is a last year model. Perhaps many of the kinks were worked out by then. I'm never big on buying a first or even second year model vehicle.
