Ok im not the biggest boxing fan but what has happened to this sport, i would at least watch big fights, i cant even recall the last one i watched.. Without looking do you know who is the current champ? I saw Rocky last night which was decent and got me thinking this sport is in some serious trouble no?

Give up on Professional boxing. Its all fixed and there isnt ANY good contenders.....

WATCH UFC...thats where the real fighting takes place...in fact 60 minutes just did a special 2 weeks ago on UFC and mixed martial arts in general and stated that it is taking a good percentage of the viewership away from traditional boxing.

People are obsessed with the Heavyweight division which has really been a lame fat boy division for years. Tyson benefitted because he fought mostly tomato cans his whole career. The few decent fighters he faced (Holyfield, Douglas-don't kill me here because he's a tomato can too) he lost. If Tyson had fought in Muhammed Ali's heyday he would have been average at best.

Look at the lighter weight divisions, Middleweight and down. There are some excellent fighters still out there. But you don't see much of it unless you watch Spanish TV.

Part of boxing's problem is pay per view. All of the good fights are on it and I for one won't pay to see the potiential of a 17 second fight. I still remember watching a hagler fight in college (on free TV) which ended in about 17 seconds. Great fight but at 70 bucks it would have been about $4.12 a second. Also one guy went for a beer as the fight was about to start, it was over when he got back.

I real professional boxer would wipe the snot out of any other fighter. Believe me.

Do you mean a real professional boxer would wipe the snot out of any other fighter in boxing or in no holds barred?

I have a hard time believing a boxer could hold his ground in NHB against someone extremely trained and skilled in grappeling.

Agreed. Once the fight gets taken to the mat, the boxer is screwed.

Ehhhhhhhhh...I much prefer boxing.

That ultimate fighting stuff is too much of a free for all for me.

Besides, real men don't kick.

I just think a real boxer would be able to avoid geting taken down, and inflict much punishment while doing so...

IMHO of course...

Isnt there a law somewhere that says a professional boxer can be arrested for using his hands as a deadly weapon if he or she was in a fight? Im serious.

Opinions make the world go round....

in reality there are quite a few Mixed Martial Arts fighters that have EXTENSIVE boxing backrounds.....

I will have to firmly disagree that a boxer could beat a UFC fighter....even standing....

again...my opinion...and i am a SERIOUS "ex" boxing fan.....so im totally not taking sides.

3 words ...MUAY TIA Boxing......and you tell me real men don't kick...HA.....

Muay Thai fighters have a killer roundhouse kick, but IIRC they usually keep it low.

If you want to see some crazy kicks just watch some Olympic style TKD...they also fight with their hands down, though, so they wouldn't last 10 seconds against a decent boxer.

I'd love to see Tyson in his prime go up against a top martial Artist. That would be fun.

Thai boxing, the roundhouse kicks are kept low so that it weakens the legs. If an opponet is weak in the legs, can't move and deliver a strong blow. Equivalent to boxer landing body shots, over the course of the fight they take a toll.

From what I hear and have seen, the killer shots are the elbows. they have no padding. Heavy blows to the head will cut you up or knock you out. Also, knee, again no padding, they try to hit the ribs, bruised enuf, the opponent can't move to generate any power.

I had an instructor who trained but never fought in the ring, I can understand why.
