After spending many late nights reading the Zone, I thought it was about time I posted. I am curious to know the cheapest hotels and best values in skilandia. One of my favorites is the Edelweiss Motel at Killington, only $89 for a weekend nite.

You call $89 for one night near Killington cheap? Get thee to the Turn of River Lodge and start saving some cash! Parkers for the Lincoln area, Grampa Grunts for Jay, Hiker's Dice for Wildcat and the River. There is a Hostel in North Conway that I have never stayed at but forget the name. Trojan Horse has your Okemo needs. Cheap is harder to come by for the Mad River Valley and Stowe area.

I stayed at the Gorham Motor Inn and it is a notch above 'flea bag' a few years ago. You can do better than the Gorham Motor Inn. The Royalty is a few more dollars but clean and has a pool and hot tub. The Town & Country isn't bad provided you aren't on a floor with a high school ski trip.

Hiker's Paradise
Little in the way of amenities, and bring your earplugs, but if you like the hostel experience it's cheap and a good place to stay. You'll find a lot of winter hikers and ice climbers there to hang out with in the evening, and expect they'll be waking up über-early to hit the trail. The motel rooms are decent, too, and the breakfast is a bargain.

We've stayed at Sugar Lodge for a midweek Ski the Valley deal before. It was only 3 days then (now it's 5) but you can also pick Sugarbush ($79pp midweek including lift ticket) or MRG ($75pp midweek including lift ticket). I don't think that's too bad considering... And if you don't feel like driving, the shuttle goes right by them. Continental breakfast was also included when we stayed there. Nice common area with fireplace. Hot tub.

Trojan Horse is hit or miss recently. I'm not sure what their schedule is. I'd call ahead.

I liked them a bit better for the mid VT area than Turn of River, because they were a bit cheaper and had a full kitchen.

I don't think the hostel thing is for me. I'm a somewhat light sleeper. Well, at least it can take me a while to fall asleep if there is a bunch of snoring going on. My luck I'd have some big sweaty fat guy right near me snoring all night. Maybe I'm antisocial, but I also don't want to have to socialize if I don't want to, and if I want to go to bed at 9 pm, I want it lights out and quiet. I'll pay the extra for a private room.

Most people in hostels during the winter are pretty serious skiers, or mountaineers/ice climbers/adventurers and the like. In my hostel experience, most people are in bed early, and if they're not, they're typically the kind of people that respect the wishes of those who do. As much as I don't like people, the one's in hostels are usually the cool ones. I've had more people offer me a beer in a hostel than I have had keep me up past when I wanted sleep.

And if worse comes to worse, there's always eyeshades and ear plugs. I usually bring my noise cancelling headphones, but I've never needed them.

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks this way. I like the idea of hostels, I just don't think they're for me. I know I'm anti-social though, so that probably has something to do with it.

That's just it. I don't want to have to bother with paraphernalia just to be able to sleep. Risking not getting a good night sleep to save a few bucks is not worth it to me. Of course, in a hotel/motel environment, there's always the risk of noise too, but your chances are less of it actually disturbing you.

Well, the risk is pretty low, like I said, I've never needed anything and I'm a fairly light sleeper, and I've probably spent more than 40 nights in hostels so far, but of course the risk/reward is up to you. I'm pretty cheap, and I think motels are a rip off, but of course perceived value is dependent on the person.

Price comes above everything nowadays for me. As a matter of fact, since my investment in a 0 degree mummy bag and an Outback wagon, I will probably be spending nights car camping in parking lots, so my priorities are probably not a good metric to go by.

Good deals at Skyauction. Used them several times for trips out West. Sometimes if you can wait till 2 - 3 weeks before your trip you can find some more great deals West and East because places are looking to unload their unused rooms for anything instead of not renting them at all. Found several condos for less than $400 for a week.

Also, check out Ebay. Amazing some of the deals out there that people don't see or are afraid to check out. I found a condo at the Marriott Mountain Valley lodge at the base of Breckenridge for $270 for a week last season and the Christie Lodge at Beaver Creek for $500 this coming season.

I'll be curious to know what your success rate is for not getting kicked out — I've heard stories going both ways. In any case, keep the windows cracked or you'll find them badly iced on the inside.
