Mount Snow Down to FOUR Trails!

THIS is just depressing.

Rain and unseasonably high temperatures have caused skiing conditions to deteroriate more rapidly than expected.

But the good news is....

However, weather forecasts are calling for colder air to move in this evening, with snowmaking temperatures returning Sunday evening and lasting throughout the week. There are also flurries and light snow in the forecast at the beginning of this week. We expect to be able to restore the high quality skiing we've provided this season in time for the Martin Luther King Birthday weekend.

Magic is closed. Bromley is down to three trails and Stratton in down to 29 trails. Okemo has 54 trails open and Killington has 70 open trails.

Plettekill has just one trail open at the bottom of the mountain

NYC is at 67F and broke the record for today of 63F and the all time record high is 72F:-o

Campgaw, Mountain Creek and Hidden Valley in New Jersey are all closed due to snowmelt and record high temperatures:sad:

It looks like the longer range forecast models are backing off on a major pattern change to colder weather in the East. We will get some cold weather next week, followed by a warmup with rain possible for MLK weekend, and then another short lived shot of cold following behind that.

Just to clarify our open trails vs. the 38 we'd like to provide. There are some intact runs in the upper mountain, especially Chute and Free Fall on the North Face. But we felt the coverage on the connector trails was too thin, and made the decision to keep skiers and riders off of upper mountain terrain completely today. (We updated the home page snow report right around the time this thread started.)

Weather forecasts predict a window of snowmaking temperatures at the summit in the very early Sunday morning hours, which will hopefully allow us to resurface the connectors and get top to bottom terrain open in time for Sunday (Youth Pay their Age Day, by the way!) Then starting Sunday, we should have overnight temps back in the high teens, low 20s to pile up the snow for MLK weekend. Hey, the forecast is even predicting actual snowfall! Could we be so fortunate?!?

Any idea as to when you might have a beter handle on what will be opened for sunday? I would like to ski tomorrow, but before we make the drive up it would be nice to know what to expect conditions wise.

We meet with Mountain Ops every afternoon and post an update on our homepage snow report. Here's what I just posted there:

The freakish January weather that we experienced Saturday is on its way out, so put away your shorts and get out your snow pants. Here’s the weather line-up for our area:

**Sunday night** Summit: 26-30, Base: 29-33 – 1-2” snowfall possible
**Monday night** Summit: 18-24, Base: 22-28 – chance of flurries
**Tuesday night** Summit: 13-19, Base 17-23 – chance of flurries
**Wednesday Day** Summit: 16-22, Base 26-32 – chance of flurries

Long range forecasts are looking at milder temperatures heading into the Martin Luther King holiday weekend, but we have a 3-4 day window of temperatures consistently cold enough to help us re-establish our top to bottom runs for all ability levels on the Main Face, North Face and in Carinthia.

On Sunday, upper level terrain will be for skiers and riders of intermediate or advanced ability only due to variable conditions. That includes Long John/Deer Run, Free Fall on the North Face and Fairway at Carinthia. Use the Grand Summit Express Quad (#11) for summit access and the Challenger Lift (#18) on the North Face. The Nitro Express Quad (#2) will be operating at Carinthia to take you back to Long John via Nugget.

Beginners will have Launch Pad, serviced by rope tow and the Discovery Shuttle lift (#28). They can also use the Tumbleweed Triple chair (#8) in front of the Sundance Base Lodge to ski the lower part of Deer Run, the open section of Somerset Road and Cooper’s Junction.

The Un Blanco Gulch terrain park will be open without lift service. Skiers and Riders can take the Discovery Shuttle lift to the bottom of the park, then follow the hiking trail up. The Parks and Pipes crew will need some time to put the Jiblet mini-rail park back in the Mixing Bowl area after the New Year Rail Jam, and plan to open it at 10am.

Please check the morning snow reports on www.mountsnow.com or call our Snow Phone at 802-464-2151 for updates. We plan on opening at 8am, and in addition to our Youth Pay Their Age day promotion, adult lift tickets will be at the Midweek Value Rates of $63. Our standard snow guarantee will also be in effect tomorrow. Please remember that you have one hour from the purchase of your ticket to come back to the clocktower to claim your snow guarantee if you are dissatisfied with conditions.

Race events cancelled again tomorrow, lots of money spent so far this season with nothing to show for it. Be lucky if a fraction of our practices, races, and planned ski days with family and friends even happen this year. Gonna go get the pool prepped for opening!

Just face it, this season is a dud and get ready for super blow-out, deep discount ski and ski wear sales everywhere. Stock up for next season and hopefully we'll get a winter (with incredibly expensive lift tickets as costs rise to make up for this season).

LOL! I've been jacked for this season since summer and it's still summer! Seriously, I know things can change quick and I hope they do but without consistently cold temps to even make snow (forget natural snow fall, storms, or blizzards), nothing's happening real fast. We hear the same thing over and over about patterns changing but they don't. How long can the areas hold out before they pack it in with already missing prime time holiday season, now MLK is in jeopardy? Places will probably limp along the best they can through President's Day/Feb School Vacation week and then just go through the motions, going out with a whimper in March.

Not all of us can afford to travel north to big areas every day or weekend like some people on here can fortunately afford to do it appears (does anyone work anymore...lol). Many of us need our Blue Hills, Ward, Bradford, Nashoba, Wachusett type places and those are the ones who are getting killed right now. I can only imagine how some of the smaller NH areas can even hang on through this.

This pic I attached was looking up standard at MS on their last day of operations for the '01-'02 season. I had VERY VIVID flashbacks to this picture as I was looking up at Standard this afternoon.

Give us some cold, please!! I'm getting really tired of trying to figure out how to dress for skiing in temps in the mid-60's with on/off light-moderate "immature snow" falling out of the sky!
