Another slow day at work, and this just popped in my head. In the 80's ski ballet was popular for a short while. There were special poles to be used to do flips, and there were courses you would ski down and do various techniques at designated spots. Ski ballet didn't last too long, but did anyone here do it? Also, are there areas where ski ballet lives on?

I was just talking about this the other day on epic. My sons B mogul team likes to screw around with some of the ballet moves whil standing around waiting for stuff. It lives on in some respect.

Ski ballet didn't last too long....

Ullr wouldn't have it any more... "Nonsense!!!" he said and with that he banished it from this great planet forever. "No man women or child should ever be subjected to this garbage again!" Proclaimed the great snow god. Moments later, he stabbed the creator of the mark 4 with an arrow and hucked him off a cliff. "kick turn this!" he yelled. And then, grabbing a pint, he sipped slowly and under his breath mentioned that he's not that into gates either, but..."at least its fast, they can live..."

 Isn't there a guy at Sundown who still skis with those Olin Ballets all the time?? I've never seen him do any ballet moves on the hill though... ;)

An instructor once told me, "whatever you can do on skis will help your overall skiing ability". Doesn't matter what it is. It all contributes toward overall skill/balance etc.

There's a couple of fruit booters at Sunday River...a husband and wife team...they fruit boot all over the mtn, arm in arm. twirling, etc...although it looks much more like ball room dancing than ballet. That's the closest thing I've seen to ballet skiing since Hot Dog...the movie.

Wait.....are you talking about snowplow guy? He's awesome...that guy masters the dance of the ski with flawless acumen. I miss him. I'm going to introduce myself to him next season and invite him to the forum!

Yeah, I do a few ballet tricks for fun. Also good for improving balance and outside edge control. I would invite anyone who likes to make fun of it to make a fool of himself trying even some simple acro moves.

I ski with a guy at Shawnee Peak who started the freestyle team at Pleasant Mt in the 70's. He coached Greg and Jeff Stump on his team for a few years. His name is Bruce Cole and he is an incredible skier. He does some ballet moves sometimes just for practice.I have never seen a smoother skier anywhere. I really enjoy skiing with him and learning from him..

Cool thread. I used to love when I saw someone break out a few ballet moves back in the day, and I would love to see it again.

yeah... It looks difficult... But so is mens figure skating... And kitchen decorating...

I don't even care to try... :)

Was last referred to "Ski Acro". Alan Shumbachenstenenbuerger (sp) was the guy who was in the Mime costume. There was an article on him in a recent ski mag that he tours with a ski ramp to show that the sport still exists. . Hedley Kerr was one of the last U.S. Champs.

I'd like to get into it...there is a snowlerblader at Blue who always flaps his arms like a bird and does spins the whole way down..now that's steezy..when I see him..I always have the Nelly song..Drop Down and Get Your Eagle On,..in my head lol..
