Resort or Ski Area: Ski Sundown

Conditions: Groomed man-made, hard pack, and some loose granular

Trip Report: I'm gonna keep this short. The conditions on the hill were generally pretty nice, with only a few slick spots here and there. I hit nor'easter to canyon a few times to ski with my wife, and spent the rest of the time on the nor'easter bumps. The snow was pretty fast but edgable for the most part. The NE bumps are holding up nicely, most of them have a nice top coating with only the occasional slick back-side poking through. I only ventured out of my preferred line (far skiers right) once so I can't speak for how all the other lines are, but they looked alright... The exhibition bumps, on the other hand, are UGLY. Very fast and slick with more ice than edgable snow. They were so bad that I almost considered skiing around them. ;) I talked MRGisevil into trying the NE bumps and she agreed with me that the NE bumps were much more fun, and I thought easier. Mr. Evil skied with me in the NE bumps all night, he looked like he was doing good. Definitely coming along, he was even talking about looking for bumps skis over the summer and getting some shorter poles! :D Severine seems to be building more confidence in her ability and is looking good, she'll be ready to hit the mogul runs in no time! 8)

It was a fun night to be out and I think everyone had a good time. It was nice to ski with the Evils, as usual, and a nice treat to be able to get out with my wife for once.

I had a great time last night! January has just not been working out for me in getting out to ski, but the last minute arrangement worked out well. Snow felt good under foot, and I felt like I retained some of that breakthrough I made recently. Nor'Easter to Canyon Run was a fun run last night. And the Evils, as usual, are great skiing partners. I even tried spinning around on the flats with them! (With no success, but eh, at least I tried...)

I know Brian really wants me to get into bump skiing... I tried the outer edge on Ex but immediately didn't like it and bailed. I was having a lot of fun arcing curves last night anyway. It wasn't busy at all so we didn't have to share the trails much.

You looked good Carrie, I'm glad you were able to make it out with me. :D

Actually I was just joking around about the bumps. If you're not ready, or that's not your thing, that's fine by me...

Had a great night last night! Started off in an atrocious mood thanks to work but by 8:30 was feeling much better thanks to some decent conditions and good company. Good to ski with you again Carrie, look fwd to tomorrow :)

Spent the first part of the night doing canyon to ex and then last hour of the night on NorEaster with the guys- was really enjoying myself. Can't wait to get out and do it again. Have to agree with Brian- the bumps on nor were a heck of a lot more fun than those on ex.... sadly, Brian did fail to catch my spectacular whizzing uni-ski 360 event when I somehow lost a ski on ex and spun around on one ski for a while like it was high school musical ice tour but without the terrible singing and coreography.

Looking forward to tonight. Thanks for the report, Brian.

That was pretty impressive, sorry I didn't get it on video... I did offer to tape as you did it again...

He was so excited to show me when I got home last night. :D

Nice job, Brian! A self-less endeavor considering there's about 3 seconds of video of you! :D

Glad you guys liked it. I thought it would be funny...

Yeah, MR. evil is looking good in the bumps.

Thanks Brian!
Wed. night was kind of a turning point for me of sorts on NE. Up until Wed. night I was kind of scared of that trail, not so much anymore. For the last month prior to Wed. all my runs on NE were on the left side (skiers left) becuase the bumps were smaller and spaced further apart compared to the deeper / closer bumps on the right side. But I was also having a very tough time controlling my speed on the left side line and felt out of control. So my logic told me that if the left side (smaller bumps) was giving me this many problems, then the right side (big / deep bumps) would be even tougher. But for some reason on Wed. I decided to follow your line of the right side and had much more control. the deeper bumps were really helping me control my speed and I was able to even get a good rhythm going. By the end of the night I was loving NE. I tagged along with Marge last night while she and Carrie skied. I hit NE every run! They blew alot of snow on NE since Wed. and it was a blast. I also took your advice and used some shorter poles (a pair of Marges old ones), they made a huge difference! They made me reach forward to plant and kept my weight forward all the way down the hill. By the end of the night I managed to clean NE top to bottom with no stops. Carrie and Marge were saying that I was looking much better last night (01/25) compared to the footage you shot on Wed.(01/23).
Marge Hit NE the last half of the evening with me last night and had a huge break through as well. By the end of the night she was ripping the right side pretty good and was nailing some killer turns on the bottom 1/3 of the run. It was a very fun night for the Evil's!

P.S - the new bumps on EX need a lot of work! The are really rough and full of HUGE death coockies, they were not very fun to ski today. But did get a little better as they day went on. I am not looking forward to them remaking the NE bumps if the results are similar to the EX re-build.

Glad to hear you guys made even more progress last night. You two are really hooked! :D

I guess I have a slightly different definition of rough... ;)

Of course I didn't get to them till about 4, so they were pretty worked in by then...

They were better by the end of the day, but not great. Early in the morning they were down right scary, hugh chunk of loose ice / snow (6" to 10" in diameter) right in the middle of the lines. At one point Marge walked a really dangerous section of the EX bumps picking up and throwing these huge death cookies into the woods. We skied most of the day with our nephew today, but we did manage to hit NE 3 or 4 times. They were really nice today as well. I was using my longer poles today, and my fatigue from last night was making NE a challenge. But a REALLY fun one.

My nephew did great today his first time on skis. We spent the morning over in Sunny Side and the Afternoon on Toms Treat and then Cannon. By the end of the day he was riding off the ramps / rails in the Sunny Side terrain park. Marge and I were too, a first for us both.

now THATS dedication.

good on you guys for feeling the bump addiction.

Nice job, Tim. We have a new bump addict in the making!

Funny video, Brian. Should have put a bit more of you in there though. In that one short clip, you were rippin'! :o

Marge needs to carry a laser gun.

Thanks, I was pretty proud of how I looked in that clip myself. I would have put more in, but that was all that I had.

Thanks Greg!

The reason there is only that one clip of Brian is becuase my camera skills stink. I know I filmed him atleast one other time on the EX bumps, but during his run I was trying to adjust the zoom and i think I ended up filming about 30 seconds of the ground:roll:

No problem Tim, I should have done a better job explaining how to use it. The clip from the Ex bumps didn't have much of me actually skiing.. ;)
