Snow as a "Product"

It really grates on me when ski operators call snow a "product". Nobody calls rain, hail or wind a product. Even though some are used for profit. These things come from the heavens above. Lakes for boat rentals or rivers for kayak rentals. Products are something that people make. I'm ok with calling man-made snow a "product", which is perhaps the intent. IMO the trails are the "products."

I think this use of the term product comes from a variety of factors. Consider that the snow on a ski trail is manipulated, moved around, changed in density and appearance, etc. before the skier (customer) "uses" it. Hence, it is the product provided by the ski resort to the customer.

Not saying I like the term, just saying it makes some amount of sense.

If it is man made it is a product IMO. Even if it is natural I paid to use it, so if it has been manipulated as BMM said, I think it is a product. That is why a lot of resorts have "condition garauntees.

Where I do most of my skiing the snow is a product. With the modern snowguns it's quite a good product as well. Doesn't matter if its real or manmade as long as they cover the mountain with it I'm happy.

+1 It is a product unless it is all natural, above tree line, ungroomed.

I do not get hung up on it really! In fact even though I have heard it used it never really crossed my mind! I would say like others made made is for sure and what they make with it whether MM or natural is a product!

Rain, hail and wind are a "curse" and with all that's coming this week I hope the ski resorts "produce" more snow! Mother Nature sure as hell isn't.

Haha! The snow is never consistently good or bad in any region - more of a jet stream thing IMO.

I know what you mean, Billski. It's a little bit of corporate overspeak. Just call it snow. I mean, it is snow, right?

This is right up there with site contractors calling topsoil "material". It's dirt. Or Starbucks calling it a Grande. And it's not "grand", it's "grahhnd-eh". :roll:

Anyway, I sure hope this non crystaline precipitation sure ceases to condensate soon so I can use my dual fiberglass reinforced snow sliding implements to go to a winter sports recreation resort and utilize my annual bar code scanning card to access a one of the humanoid carriers hung from the cow poo powered haul rope so I can go skiing.

That's what we call it still, skiing, right?
