Times Tough for Tenney??

I have a few passes there so I plan to go during the Feburary vacation week... sure hope the passes weren't a waste of money. :(

I have seen the guns going, but yeah not much open for a place that hyped up a snowmaking system that could make snow year round. The new proposal is for an old owner to buy it back. He wants to extend trails down the access road, making the current base the mid-station. There would be a bunch of condos, houses, golf course, water slide, and retirement home, etc, etc. Plymouth really needs the property tax revenue. PSU has bought up half the town, and doesn't pay taxes. Residents pay twice as much as the next town. Lowe's and Home Depot are jumping through the hoops right now, they may be coming soon.

considering kmart just put a twofer one coupon good any time on their web site, i don't think it is fair to judge tenney based on a mid-week price incentive. i think most new england ski areas are sucking pretty bad this month. as much as i hate to say it, 10 trails more than magic for example of another area not doing so well due to lack of snow.

Well there are two things that suggest problems. Lack of snowmaking (at least according to reports...though this is weather related in part), and a sudden drop of the midweek price. Both suggest that maybe something isn't working considering other places are blowing snow when they can and trying to expand terrain.

I think certain no-frills areas like Tenney and Mad River Glen are being fair to consumers by offering discounted tickets while their terrain is limited. I don't think we can take the leap that discounted tickets alone means financial trouble.

I was there 5 yrs ago. I went for the same $15 deal. There was quality issues. Mainly unopened runs.

It's my understanding both from what's been written in the local papers as well as from people I've spoken to while at Waterville is that the sale of Tenney is imminent, and I'm sure that the current owners don't want to get themselves deeper in the hole by running snowguns 24/7.

Magic seems to be in the deep doo also. They are presently closed until 1/27!

Do the trails there still seem off-camber? I think the folks who run Crotched should grab it & run it their way. Riding & skiing till 3am next to a party college! What could go wrong?

MRG is 100% open, they seem to be doing great. With all due respect I don't think Tenney and MRG belong in the same sentence in this regard.

BTW Tenny sold their SnoMagic system to a ballpark in Alabama a couple of years ago.

I think they'd do well with the place. My main point was that 10e was not being run too well or run with little interest, which is sad to see. Glad I'm not a passholder.

It's easy to refute my point about MRG's limited skiing after they received 12"-14 and were able to open up everything. The fact remains that like many places who don't rely on snowmaking, they were struggling and offered discount skiing.

Sorry, I guess we can agree to disagree. MRG has had as much or more of their terrain open than many resorts with snowmaking during the entire season.

i think that statement needs two qualifies: the fact that MRG receives MUCH more natural snow than tenney and also the fact that MRG has one of the most liberal trail opening policies, probably second only to magic in new england i would guess.

Let's take today for example regarding MRG:

Bolton 75% open
Burke 58% open
Gore 45% open
Jay 90%
Kmart 74%
Okemo 88%
Smuggs 73%
Stowe 100%
Bush 94%
Loaf 57%
SR 78%
MRG 100%

This is how it's been all season. MRG is not struggling. When most of the skiers are owners I think you have a unique mentality and dynamics as to how to run the mountain. Burke and Sugarloaf, now they are having problems.

FWIF, My son and a friend went to SR on Sat. Said the conditions were good but was so crowded they didn't really enjoy the day.

Hahaha...sorry, but no. This is not how it's been all season. You must have just started checking out MRG's snow reports. I've been checking them out all season. They've been very honest in reporting rain, the closing of the single, the discount ticket prices while they were struggling WITH THEIR TRAIL COUNT.

MRG is not struggling.

You're misunderstanding me. I never said MRG was struggling financially.

here's the text of a full page ad in 2/2's Plymouth Record-Enterprise:

Dear friends and employees of Tenney Mountain,

We wish to extend our thanks and heartfelt gratitude to one and all as we have progressed through a difficult ownership transition. Getting a late start and having little help from mother nature presented a huge challenge, but you perservered and we're confident that there will be a strong finish of which we can all be proud.

Your faith and efforts have allowed us to chart a new course for the ski area and resort complex. in the coming weeks and months, we look forward to sharing with you our vision for the future of Tenney Mountain.

See you on the slopes!

For whatever reason, I have always wanted this place be viable, Maybe the new owners should have a online suggestion box so all of us skiing Einsteins can share what we would like to see done differently.
