Turn By Turn Directions

Boyne, Boyne Highlands and Searchmont are in the Northeast??? I think their GPS needs a little geography lesson if they think that's the case! ;)

Cool but who gets lost on a trail system in a resort?

I have a ******* snowboarding buddy who apparently can't read a trail map.

We were at Sunday River a couple years ago... A bunch of us went back to the condo for lunch. He decides that he wants to keep boarding as it's the only day he'll probably get out all season... Him and a friend say 'we can meet up later' and take off.

I head back out after lunch, call them, no answer, text them, no response... ski for a while, head back in around 3:00.

Just after I get my boots off I get a call "we don't know how to get back to the condo."

Me: Ski down, when you get to a lift, stop and tell me where you are...

He calls me back, "We're at south ridge, between the quad and the chondola thing"

Me "OK, take the quad, get off and turn left (I remind him, left as you're looking at the mountain, not left as when you're skiing), go straight and whenever you have an option, go to your right (to stay higher on the hill)... You'll come to Barker basin, go straight through onto roadrunner, turn left after the tunnel and you'll be at the condo... (Brookside).

He calls me 20 minutes later... "Dude, we got lost, I have no idea where we are."

I asked him what he saw.

"We're at a lift that says 'Aurora Quad'"...

I ended up putting my boots back on and went to get them so they'd make it back before last chair.

Haha...this is funny. Your buddy probably struggles with making coffee in the mornings too =)

I suppose some larger resorts can be confusing to those who don't ski/ride often but those who don't get out there much probably don't have a GPS either.

coming to your GPS this season, you won't get lost while skiing ever again.

SnowRanger Ski Resort Maps for Garmin® and Magellan® GPS
Now with turn-by-turn directions on-mountain: never get lost again!

I bought the North America package for my Garmin. I haven’t tried it on the slopes yet, but the maps seem to be pretty good. The only criticism is that their Killington map is at least three years out of date: it shows Great Eastern starting at the top of Killington Peak, and I believe 2007 was the last year that was true.

There are a number of iPhone apps that claim to offer turn-by-turn ski slope directions, but I haven’t tried any of them.

I might consider getting this for my Garmin Oregon 450. Could be useful in large resorts that you're not completely familiar with. Particularly if you have plans to meet up with someone at a particular time and place.

Places like Killington, Sunday River, Sugarloaf, Sugarbush, it can sometimes be a bit of a PIA to navigate the trails and lifts to get from your current location to a particular point; especially if you aren't exactly sure where your current location is.

Still a number of glaring omissions in New England. MRG, Burke, Wildcat, Saddleback are among the areas that aren't included.

Also, I'm wondering how detailed their directions really are. At places like Alta and Snowbird, it can be hard to find the entrances to some of the best runs. Many of them are not marked by signs, the entrances are hidden and require some local knowledge to locate.

I'd be very surprised if this product provided that level of detail in their directions.

If you have to rely on something like this to find the best spots at Alta/Snowbird....you just might not live through the day....local knowledge can't be beat...although it wouldn't hurt to have this with you in case you get lost.

True. But sometimes, even when someone has shown you how to get to a particular run, it can be hard to find your way back at a later time.
I don't like stopping and taking stuff out of my pocket. That's why I never take as many pictures as I later wish

I did.

So pulling a GPS out and punching up directions isn't something I'd likely end up doing. I'd rather just follow someone or do some exploring on my own.

However, it might be nice to save my tracks from my ski days. But I don't really need to buy this product to do that. Simply turn tracking on and leave the Oregon in my pocket for the day.

When I saw the new Zeal goggles with GPS and other info built in I was impressed ..too a point. I'm waiting for a pair that has a true HUD in it that you could see a trail map and where you are on it....another feature could be a tracking device so everyone could keep track of each other...would have come in handy when I lost a first timer at Alta...he fell into a snow well next to a rock, kind of like a tree well..took him 15 minutes to get out...as I was freaking out wondering where he went...now if I had a few million I could design these things.
