Assuming this isn't an April fool's joke this is a great deal if you can ski these areas with the Epic pass, then travel west and use the pass there as well.

IT could be true. But I think for Vail a Stowe or Sugarbush would be major northeast target for them. The only reason the NY3 would work for them is the cross mountain riding they are into. They like riding with bling both mountain and surrounding area.

Never happen, at least Vail buying ORDA. They don't allow much real estate development at those areas.

Vail is not interested in the northeast, or at least in terms of the major northeastern destination resorts. They have bought two midwest feeder hills in metro areas, Afton Alps near Minneapolis, Minnesota and Mount Brighton in Michigan, outside the Detroit suburbs.

All the major eastern resorts are in direct competiton with Vail resorts for destination visits. Vail is focused on three western skiing regions with excellent airport access....why would you drive up north when you can take a 4 hour flight?

Why not? The midwest hills act as a "gateway" to the bigger resorts out west. It will be years for someone who has skied in the midwest their whole life before they go to a big Vail resort out west. In the east we've got many people who go out west each year. The trick is just getting them to a Vail resort. A 700$ pass that gives you an eastern resort for when you're home and a premier western resort when you're away will do that.

There is no way the east has anywhere close to the amount of people who are there for a week on vacation than a western resort. No way this has anything to do with "direct competition" with Vail.

I agree with this. I know several people who only ski in the west for 1 week a year or every other year.

The irony is, if they only ski once per year they're almost certainly not good enough to get the advantages of skiing out west. May as well lap groomers.
