Will it be worth it?

I have a trip planned for two days of skiing Jan 20 and 21 at Killington. Driving up from Philly. Will it be worth it? I love skiing but if 1/2 the mountain is closed, it makes for a long ride. I know it can snow between now and then but looking at the forcast the rest of this week looks like may be two or three more inches at best and I don't see major changes for next week (but who can really tell). What are the conditions at Killington really like right now? How much snow do they need to make resort at least 75% open?

Thanks!

I hate Kmart but yes it will be worth it. They have at least 72 more hours of good snowmaking temps. Even without anymore natrual they should be able to lay down a very decent base on about 75%. Conditions are not going to be perfect but it should be worth the drive.

I had my dates confused I thought you were talking about this weekend. It is too soon to tell about next weekend but given all of the hype of a pattern change I would say it would be better than it is now.

FWIW as said they have the most open. I went last Tuesday and it was boilerplate....but that was then. None of us can predict what will happen for next week.

Temps will warm again with some rain for the weekend but on the 16th it will cool significantly and be cold and snowy well into February. It's your call, if you wait one or two weeks longer you might be looking at epic conditions!

I was looking at the gfs model runs and it looks like a big storm next friday

I am with you on this call, I think we are going to get walloped with lots of snow in late January-February. For the first time in a long time we finally have arctic air on the move torwards us next week.

Even better news is that there is a better chance of see all frozen precipitation this weekend, especially in the northern areas of New England, just hopefully not freezing rain.

I am holding you to that Loafer...

I am going to shop around tomorrow for a snowplowing contract, since I do not have a snowthrower and have 300' + of driveway.

Better safe than sorry.

For the love of God, man, DON"T DO IT! There's no better way to banish all snow than to put a deposit on a plowing contract. You're going to doom us all!

Dont base your entire trip on how much of the mountain they have open. Hell Pats Peak had almost 90% of their terrain open as little as a week ago. Killington will not dissapoint. Keep in mind they have like 200 trails. 50 % is still worlds above anywhere else in the east.

I know they have a lot of runs but it kills me that so many are closed. I skipped Killington last year to go to Sugarloaf instead. Two years ago Kilington had a bad January and I was very dissapointed. I'm going to see if I can move the reservations a week or so.

I agree with the above comments. Go to the interactive trail map and see just how much IS open. Lots of runs...lots of good runs. You are not going to get anything REMOTELY close to that amount anytime soon at anyplace else. And also remember that Killington's trails are divided into three or four sections....so even though "a lot may look closed," the fact is that there is a lot open. If you are still not sure, maybe ask THESE GUYS for advice. Trip reports from K-mart are posted daily...

FYI, it's going to suck. I wouldn't bother going before mid March.

So long as you are willing to shovel out my driveway, fine.

Route 31 south is one steep highway to get to my house, it should be lots of fun when it snows next week.

Yes, it's worth it. You need to ski, and Killington is the best place to do it if you're looking for the maximum amount of terrain.
