Would you relocate West?

If you had the opportunity to move near a Western ski area, would you? Imagine that you were transferred and could make your current salary and had the same position as you do now, would you go?

For me, I don't think I would. Obviously, I'd have to discuss this with my wife and make the decision with her, but New England is my home and I'm not sure if I'd be comfortable anywhere else. Plus my entire immediate family all lives within 2 1/2 hours of each other. If I were at a different point in my life, say just out of college, I'd probably do it, but at this point, I'd probably just stay put. You?

Most likely, it would be tough leaving the family behind though. Especially now that we have a daughter, I don't think the Grandparents would appreciate that too much... So maybe not, I might have to settle with retiring there instead...

Kids change things don't they? We are about a year from having one on the ground. I couldn't imagine taking "the grandchildren" away from our folks. We actually had this discussion over the past few months. We considered moving down to VA but I don't think I could be that far from my family and friends.

Another reason for staying in New England is all that it has to offer. I grew up in Westchester County NY and have yet to get out and experience NE. The last few years I have skied, hiked, and been out in nature so much more. I know I can do those things out West, but I have only seen a fraction of what this region has to offer. Not to mention the withdrawal I would go through from being away from Cape Cod.

Then there is the seasonal depression that my wife gets. I don't know if she could take a longer winter. She's a die-hard skier, but she is also a sun worshipper .

Family is the deciding factor for me as well.. I have often thought about this move..in GREAT detail. I lived in Boulder for a year and loved it, but I was MUCH younger...now I am settling down..thinking of starting a family, and planning a move to NH...I decided that NH would give me a decent enough taste of the mountains on a daily basis to soothe my needs, and still be close enough to family for visits. I stll have many friends in colorado so I can make trips out whenever...who knows though...maybe someday...kids off to college..who knows.

I do love it out west, but like mentioned...New england/Tri State is my home....

Not sure..I would have to go spend some time in the area that I would be moving to in order to make that decision. Thats a big move for a family so I think one would have to really check everything out before doing it. Now if I had a chance to move to CT or Mass..I would do it in a second.

Move West?

Is this topic a set-up for me? I am moving west as soon as I sell my house. Of course, I am retired, so work is not an issue. My family is already spread out all over the country, and my grown-up kids love to ski. Salt Lake City is no more than about 4 hours travel time from anywhere in the USA, and their winter/summer cycle is very comparable to what you can experience here in the northeast (without the humidity in the summer). This combination works for me and my wife.

That's more likely that path the we'd go if we decided to relocate, for the same reasons.

If the job is as good as this one I'd go: most of the family is over there and when I came out here I still I the western resorts snow totals on my yahoo page - adding the eastern resorts and comparing the totals hurt. But I'm really loving it back here as well...

That is a tough one. I'll be retired on a pension in a couple of years, so $ isn't a factor. I look forward to working in a flexable part-time situation that will let me ski whenever I want.

However, my Dad is getting up there in years, my wife will still be working, youngest kid will be in high school, other family and close friends, lots of strings attached. I'll probably end up in the ADKs full time, which ain't so bad at all.

When I was younger, there was no way I would have considered leaving the east. Now that I'm older, hell yeah! We have no kids, parents passed away some time ago. Still have a brother, sister, niece, nephews, etc..... but we can always visit. Love places out here like Cape Cod, but have been going there over 30 years, change of scenery wouldn't hurt, especially since in this phase of our lives me and my wife think skiing all year long.

nope. Love it here in new england and both my family and my wifes family is firmly planted here. Skiing is awesome and a big part of my life, but it's not the only part. Taking my kids away from their grandparents would be cruel and unusual punishment. besides, i really like being close to both boston and new york. I wouldn't mind moving out of central ct at some point but our neighborhood is perfect for kids.

I'd do it. It's gorgeous out there and I'd be able to do all the things I love to do X 2!

I've always grown up being far away from family. When in Brazil we were extremely far away from my Dad's side (in Ohio), and were 12hrs drive from family in the country. Throw in the fact that we moved a few times from city to city and country to country when I was growing up ...

It would be hard to make the initial jump, but I'd have no problem being at distance from my immediate family. My girlfriend on the other hand would not be able to handle that, since she grew up and lived in one house her entire life and her entire family is a stone's throw away (minus a few exceptions).

I'll retire in the White's already looking for the retirement home. I like the hiking. I like the skiing. Close to family. The east has a great education base. All the things I want are here.
